What I’d like to see in the next Mobile Safari (iPod/iPhone)

iPod touch with Safari
Here’s a list of things I’d like to see webkit for Mobile Safari to support. The browser currently meets a lot of my web-app needs, but I want more! And yes, I could just write my own real apps, but I’d prefer a way for developers to make things without having to pay for the privilege to do so. So here’s what I’m looking for:

Audio object

Once my baby boy’s gotten to the point at which I can trust him to use my iPod for tapping instead of just running around with, I hope to offer him some simple web-app-games that mimic the purpose of toddler books and toys. I’ve started making some neat stuff, but with sound effects it could allow for even better things.

CSS Position: fixed

I understand that with the zoomy nature of Mobile Safari, fixed positioning just really work. However, what if it were made to work only when zooming is disabled? That should give web developers the option to make better looking web apps without requiring elaborate workarounds.

Access to accelerometer data

This could lead to all sorts of cool games, etc.

Video

Not as important as audio, but it would still be nice to show video without using the full screen.

HTML5 name/value pairs

Cookies and database tables make this not particularly important, but it would make things easier.

3D Canvas

Okay, so there’s no spec for it yet. That didn’t stop Opera or Mozilla from making an experimental implementation. And Apple has shown they’re not afraid to experiment. And oh yeah, 3D transforms already run like a dream, so this should be a no-brainer.

Glad to hear I’m not the only one, but I wouldn’t expect a petition to do much good. Apple isn’t exactly known for listening to the demands of people, they prefer to think they know what’s best for their users.

Having said that, it certainly can’t hurt. So if you do start one, let me know and I’ll join in.

Hi Alexis!

I’ve also been thinking about the lack of these in Mobile Safari and thought that, if I could encounter more people who share the same view about this, we could start one of those on-line petitions to ask Apple to provide said functionality for us.

I don’t know if this would actually work, but I think it’s worth a try, don’t you think?
